While it is always possible to renew your IFR rating in flight, an alternative is available for Cargair’s clients. Cargair has at your disposal a highly sophisticated flight training device, the level 5 Mechtronix, approved by Transport Canada for IFR renewals. The candidates who wish to renew their IFR on the FTD have two configuration choices: either using the Beechcraft King Air 200 (BE20 turbine) or the Beechcraft Baron 58 (BE55 light twin). Those who already have turbine experience will appreciate the BE20 equipped with EFIS and EHIS, as well as an autopilot with which the candidate can complete approaches. For those pilots with more experience on piston engines, the BE55 would be the ideal model, as it is similar to various types of aircraft, notably the Piper Aztec and the Piper Seneca with approach speeds of 125kts. The POH for both models, as well as the normal and emergency checklists are available for reference.
More and more widespread in aviation, the GPS is now an indispensable working tool for your IFR renewal. Equipped with the Garmin 430 and up-to-date database, our FTD can be used to complete GNSS approaches, whether overlay or stand alone. Keep in mind that the examiner can ask any candidate for a GNSS approach during your flight test.
Candidates interested in renewing their IFR in the FTD will be evaluated by a qualified instructor who will then define a training schedule to ensure a successful flight test. It should be noted that no recommendation is required to complete an IFR renewal flight test. Nonetheless, in the event of a fail, the candidate will then require a recommendation letter from an instructor. Our qualified instructors are able to guide you in your training, and whether your IFR experience is recent or not, you will reach the necessary level to successfully pass your flight test.
Mechtronix Level 5 FTD
Due to the high level of reality of the Mechtronix level 5 FTD, very little time is needed to adapt. The control column and rudders are controlled pneumatically, providing a realistic feel in flight. The screen is 150˚ x 35˚, providing an excellent visual reference during the transition from IMC flight to visual contact with the runway, as well as for taxi operations. The attention to detail with regard to St-Hubert airport (CYHU) offers the possibility for the pilot to taxi the aircraft from the ramp to the active runway. The cockpit is almost identical to that of the BE20, supplying the pilot with a familiar environment to carry out the flight, in normal and emergency procedures. The complete set of avionics allows for all types of approaches as stated in the “Canada Air Pilot”. From the instructor control post, it is possible to modify all aspects of environment (visibility, clouds, precipitation, pressure, turbulence day/night), as well as the parameters for the flight (fuel, weight). For excellent training in procedures, the instructor can also simulate any failures or systems emergency.
Finally, for those who believe that the IFR renewal in the FTD will be more difficult than if completed in an aircraft, just know that the guidelines for the simulator test require that the examiner complete the flight test in the area where the FTD is located. As for the “real” emergencies the examiner can impose during the flight test, rest assured that our qualified instructors will fully prepare you for such eventualities.
Renew your IFR at a Fraction of the Price
Another advantage of using the Mechtronix level 5 FTD for your IFR renewal is that for a fraction of the price, you can renew your rating in an FTD of the highest level of technology and increase your skill level with more in-depth training in realistic weather conditions. Also, the FTD allows more consistency in your training schedule as your flight test will never be delayed due to bad weather!
