AVIATION LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY TEST
The language proficiency test serves to determine linguistic competency of the candidate in English within an aviation context. It was conceived for those who have aviation knowledge but for whom English is not their first language. All applicants who wish to obtain an aviation license, including native English speakers, must pass the language proficiency test. This effort was mandated by ICAO, coming into effect as of March 2008, to ensure all users maintain a standardized level of aviation English.
WHAT IS THE GOAL OF THE TEST?
In Canada the test is used to evaluate English or French language competencies for those who wish to obtain an aviation license. The requirements are based on international standards and they apply to all licenses delivered after the 5th of March 2008. As such, it is necessary that all holders of aviation licenses and student permits undergo the test.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT WHEN TAKING THE TEST?
A qualified examiner runs the test. The test is ideally completed over the telephone. The examiner and the candidate will be seated in separate rooms. The test is not completed in interview form, but is scenario based: the examiner presents various scenarios, and the candidate must respond as if it were actual reality (role playing).
The candidate will be asked to respond to a minimum of 20 questions. The examiner must keep to the tested scenarios, and it is always possible for the candidate to ask the examiner to repeat a question.
The test evaluates:
- Oral comprehension
- Oral pronunciation/expression
- Response to various scenarios
WHEN CAN I TAKE THE TEST?
You can set up an appointment at any time. Upon receiving the request, the examiner will communicate a date and time to the candidate and will supply the relevant information for the test.
HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?
The test lasts around 20 minutes.
WHAT DO I NEED TO TAKE THE TEST?
You will need the Candidate Manual, a pen or pencil, and scrap paper to take notes if needed. The Manual includes maps that the candidate will need during the test. If you do not have the manual you will need to print the maps for your test!
WILL THE RESULT BE RECORDED?
No, the results are inscribed directly on the test sheet. It is not required that the test be recorded.
WHEN WILL I KNOW MY RESULT?
The examiner will communicate your results shortly after the end of the test. Transport Canada will provide the official results by mail three weeks after the test. The letter will state the global note and not the detailed breakdown of each question. However, it is possible to obtain a more detailed breakdown by asking for a copy of the results directly from the examiner after the test.
The result will correspond to one of the following levels:
Expert
Functional
Inferior to Functional
