Conversion of a license to obtain a Canadian PPL
Obtaining a Canadian private pilot license is simple if you already have an international aviation license. You must pass a Canadian medical exam by a recognized Transport Canada aviation medical examiner.
You must then pass a written exam on Canadian air law (PSTAR exam), and a Radiotelephone Restricted Operator Certificate exam. The Cargair team makes all the necessary tools available to successfully pass these exams.
In summary, a Canadian private pilot license can be obtained when you make the license request, pay a 115$ fee, obtain a medical class 3 from a Transport Canada aviation medical examiner and meet the following criteria:
- A minimum of 45 hours of flight;
- 17 hours of dual flight and 12 hours of solo flight;
- 5 hours of instrument flight with a maximum of 3 hours on a flight training device (FTD);
- A 150 nautical mile solo navigation, which includes 2 stops.
Conversion of a Commercial License
To convert an international license into a Canadian commercial license, you must make the license request, pay a 150$ fee, obtain a medical class 1 from a Transport Canada aviation medical examiner and meet the following criteria:
- 200 flight hours total;
- 100 hours pilot in command (PIC);
- 10 hours night flying, including 5 hours dual flight and 5 hours solo flight;
- 20 instrument flight hours, with a maximum of 10 hours in a flight training device (FTD);
- 20 hours of navigation, including a 300 nautical mile navigation;
- Pass the CPL written exam;
- Pass the CPL flight test.
Conversion of an International ATPL license to a Canadian ATPL license
To convert an international airline license into a Canadian airline license, you must complete a license request, pay the fees related to this request, obtain a medical class 1 from a Transport Canada aviation medical examiner and meet the following criteria:
- 1500 hours total, including 250 hours pilot in command (co-pilot hours are recognized at 50%);
- 100 hours night flying, including 25 hours of night navigation;
- 250 hours of navigation;
- 75 hours of instrument flying, including a maximum of 20 hours in a flight training device (FTD);
- Pass the ATPL written exams (SARON/SAMRA) and the IFR written exam;
- Pass the IFR flight test on a multi-engine aircraft
Rating Conversions of an International License (night rating, instrument rating, multi-engine rating)
Canada recognizes the experienced gained abroad while still respecting the Canadian regulations with regard to minimum requirements:
- Be a holder of a Canadian license;
- Obtain a Canadian medical;
- Pass the written exam (if required);
- Pass the flight test;
- Complete the rating request form;
- Pay the fees related to the request.

Validation of International licenses
This document allows you to complete dual and solo hours following the approval of a flight instructor. You must present your aviation license, your medical certificate, your logbook, your passport and pay fees at a Transport Canada office. This validation, legal for one year, does not allow further ratings to be added.

License Conversion (TCAA to FAA)
1. Obtain a letter from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) validating the authenticity of your Canadian license. To do this you must:
• Fill in this document: by following these guidelines and fax it to the following number: 405-954-9922.
• Indicate on the form the centre where you would like to receive the license FAA (FSDO) - FAA Flight Standards District Office (FSDO)
You will receive the confirmation of authenticity by the mail within 45 days.
2. Obtain an American medical certificate (class 1 for airline pilot, class 2 for a commercial license, class 3 for private pilot license). The list of aviation medical examiners (AME) able to complete American medical exams.
3. Pass a written exam on air law and communications
• You must pass the exam (40 multiple-choice questions) with at least 70%
• To take the exam you must bring: your passport, your driver’s license and your Canadian aviation license
4. With these three documents you can take an appointment with the FSDO designated on the form (AFS-760) in order to receive your American license
5. If the FSDO in Albany, NY is the centre you have chosen, make your appointment with Mrs. Colleen M. McGrady in order to receive your license. Before doing so, we strongly suggest the following
• Send her an email with the following documents:
- Your confirmation of authenticity from Oklahoma City;
- Your written exam results;
- Your FAA medical certificate;
- Your Canadian aviation license and medical;
- A photocopy of the last page of your logbook.
