Many pilots are content with a private or commercial licence; however, others choose to supplement
their knowledge with one or more (endorsements qualifications) or ratings. The multi-engine and

instrument ratings are the most popular of these, since they represent the minimum required of pilots
by the commercial aviation industry.
Multi-Engine Rating: Although Transport Canada does not require a minimum flight time for the
multi-engine rating, the candidate must complete approximately 10 hours of training and successfully
complete a flight test.

Instrument Rating: This rating is mandatory for pilots who will fly without visual reference or in
weather conditions that fall short of those prescribed in visual flight rules (VFR). This rating
requires 40 hours of instrument training of which 50% may be completed on a simulator, as well as
the completion of a written examination and a flight test.
